Jordan King

On Identity Design
My favorite design projects are based around identity. I think there is a special kind of magic in distilling an idea into its simplest form, whether it takes the form of a name, mark, or color palette. In an increasingly cluttered world, simplicity means ideas can spread and withstand the test of time.

On Web Design
I have built and managed websites using WordPress, Squarespace, Carrd, and Duda. I currently prefer Carrd for personal projects like this portfolio ($20 a year for 10 sites!) and Duda for client work (beautifully simple white-label platform for agencies).

Note: I included the Pacesetting Times website not because it's beautiful (it's not haha) but because it is functional. I built it seven years ago while interning as a reporter at a tiny newspaper. I taught their staff how to use Wordpress, and they still use it today!

On Film Production
While working at Sonshine Academy, I have taught myself the basics of filming and editing video. This skill set has fueled growth because I view parents as our influencers who share the clips with our target market. I love using video to capture a wide range of emotion.

On Company Culture
I enjoy working toward a common goal with passionate people. I take work seriously, but I like to laugh about almost everything else. I believe most conflicts can be resolved with empathy and communication.

Q&A Lightning Round

What is your short-term goal?

To transition from a generalist to a specialist by doing a large body of work and receiving honest feedback on what I create.

What is your long-term mission?

To rebrand the American South.

Which character are you from The Office?

In a room full of Jims, I am Dwight. In a room full of Dwights, I am Jim.

Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

I am an aggressive optimist. I am confident in the future because I believe we can influence the outcome. (I tried adding the term "Aggressive Optimist" to Urban Dictionary, but it wasn't approved as of the time I made this portfolio.)

What is your favorite nonprofit organization?

Charity: Water. I love the founder's story, their innovative marketing techniques, and their results-driven goals.

What is your favorite funny movie?

Hot Rod

What is your favorite serious movie?

What book are you reading?

Atomic Habits by James Clear

What is a weakness you'd like to correct?

I tend to internalize external conflicts. This creates unnecessary stress.

Why are you leaving your current job?

I need the input of creative people to grow. In my current workplace, I am the only creative on the team. On good days, it's an echo chamber where I create more "art" than design. On bad days, it's the creative equivalent of solitary confinement.

Where is your favorite place that you've ever lived?

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It's an old steel town that is in the process of rebranding itself as a tech hotspot and cultural hub.

Where is your least favorite place that you've ever lived?

Barstow, California. It's in the middle of the Mojave Desert. There's a great documentary about this area. It's about meth addicts who pay for their habit by salvaging precious metals from an active military bombing range. So yeah...

What is your favorite font?

Right now it's Objectivity.

Who is your favorite designer?

Probably Mackey Saturday.

What makes you want to tear your hair out?

The Conway city flag.
